Science and Research at the Medical Faculty

At the Medical Faculty of Ulm University a research profile has been developed during recent years, strengthened through directed appointment of professorships, external funding and faculty resources. The main research topics are:

Molecular Mechanisms of Aging and Age-associated Diseases:

  • Stem Cell Aging, Signal Transduction Pathways, Apoptosis
  • Hemato-Oncology
  • Rare Neurodegenerative Diseases
  • Cardiometabolic Diseases (Diabetes and Obesity)

Trauma Research / Musculoskeletal Research:

  • Physical Trauma
  • Psychic Trauma

These research areas are strengthened by 33 nationally and internationally funded research networks coordinated in Ulm (as of December 2014).

These developments were accompanied by a remarkable increase in third-party funds acquired (more than 100% since 2001) and in publication output (over 100% more cumulated impact factor points since 2001; see Selected Publications). Compared to other medical faculties in Germany Ulm is ranking clearly above the average for third-party funds per professor.
